For years, I have been told that because our ministry does good works, we cannot be proclaiming the Gospel, as if they are incompatible with one another.  I’ve been told works are just man’s works for man’s glory, and they have nothing to do with ministry.  I’ve had churches so convinced of this that they stop supporting this ministry because they believe we are just about “good works for our glory.” Although there is definite danger for all believers to work for our own glory and neglect our relationship with God, there is also danger of getting so caught up in our beliefs, that we forget to serve others and regretfully forget the command of Matthew 5:16. Jesus claims in this verse, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Good Works must be done out of our love for Christ in order to bring glory to the Father.

CSM has been around for 50 years because we have been ordained by God to do good works through service and the giving of resources in order to bring Him glory.  In the book of Mark it says, “But among you will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant. And whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45 )

Further, Galations 5:13 says, “serve one another in love,” and CSM is here to serve one another compassionately, righteously, and sacrificially. We do this so the body of Christ will seek the well-being of another. The “Good Works” we are called to do is serve the body of Christ so that they can serve people with good works, share the Gospel, and glorify God.

God saves us by grace apart from good works (Ephesians 2:8-9) and then Ephesians 2:10 says, “We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do “good works” which he has preordained for us to do.” I have been ordained (as a pastor) to carry out the “Good Works” of God, which he has assigned to me here at CSM. CSM is here to do Good Works in God’s good way, and that way is through the gospel ministry. This Mission has allowed us to expand the churches’ reach and impact and serve families with justice and righteousness. Justice defined is to make things right for all humanity. Righteousness is following God’s word in doing right to all humankind. This includes the right to know Jesus as Savior and the right to allow God to use us in the works of man to bring more people to Jesus. Good works brings justice to the poor, to widows, to the fatherless and the marginalized. This may look like providing healthy food and education as well as safer housing for those in need. This looks like supplying essential needs to thousands of families.  Righteousness comes through everyday things we do in love and how we walk with the churches as they disciple people in gospel ministry daily.

Good works allow us to make and equip disciples with principles of justice and righteousness and live out the gospel message daily in our lives. We have an amazing Board that has led the charge and helped me to walk in this vision of Oneness. We have a gifted staff that are Godly servants with the body of Christ who serve our partners and people well and with honor. We have a Junior Board who are learning to do Good Works with Godly principles to advance the body and glorify God. We have churches that we walk with to accomplish the Gospel in word and deed to grow the Kingdom and glorify God. We have thousands of volunteers who help CSM do the work of ministry. We have touched, served, and seen the Gospel in action because we can see the fruit of the spirit as people group and mature in their faith, and we have seen lives change and grow the Kingdom. These are the Good Works of ministry that CSM seeks as we walk alongside the church.  We, as Christians, are God’s Masterpiece that He works through.  We at CSM are working to advance the Gospel with justice and righteousness as our guiding principles. God’s message is not in word only but in deeds that help disciple those in applying these principles on earth and today.

This month we are preparing for good works at Thanksgiving to help 4100 families with a Thanksgiving meal. We are doing this with 42 organizations at 33 different sites so that the good works of the people of God will be the hands, feet and voice of God and give glory to God.
