MLK DNow weekend
Recently, during Martin Luther King (MLK) weekend, Dawson Student Ministry and Grace Community Church’s youth ministry, 4.12 Ministry, hosted DiscipleNow events at their churches. Christian Service Mission connected each church to local schools for the service portion of their weekend. Students helped clean classrooms and had fun serving together. CSM provided the cleaning supplies. Dawson Student Ministry served Booker T. Washington K-8 School, A. H. Parker High School, and West End Academy, while 4.12 Ministry served Hemphill Elementary School.
Tracy Hipps happily taught Grace Community Church’s youth group on Saturday morning. Lauren Bielstein, Dawson attender and one of our interns, spoke to the Dawson youth group about her service with CSM and the importance of MLK Day.
The two groups came together at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church to listen to Janice Kelsey speak. Janice Kelsey told her story about being alive during the civil rights movement, the impact of the 16th St. Baptist Church bombing, and her relationship to the four girls who were killed. You can listen to her talk here. The Dawson students also sang over Janice after she finished speaking. It was stunning to see the Spirit bless her in song. We’ve posted it on our social media accounts as well.
We were grateful to play a small part in the life of these students through service!
